Vega T, Lozano JE, Meerhoff T, Snacken R, Beauté J, Jorgensen P, Ortiz de Lejarazu R, Domegan L, Mossong J, Nielsen J, Born R, Larrauri A, Brown C - Influenza Other Respir Viruses (2015)

Bottom Line: The intensity of 2013/2014 season is described and compared by country.Comparing intensity among seasons or countries is essential for understanding patterns in seasonal epidemics. An automated standardized model for comparison should be implemented at national and international levels.

fig03: Weekly ILI/ARI intensity levels in Europe 2013/2014 during the epidemic period (weeks 01/2014 to 15/2014). ILI, influenza-like illnesses; ARI, acute respiratory illnesses.

Mentions: Weekly intensity in Europe during the 2013/2014 epidemic period is represented in Figure3 and in the animated Appendix S2. The epidemic period started in Europe in January 2014 in Poland, Greece, and Spain. Data from Poland show an increase of the weekly rates in the last two seasons with relative high pre-epidemic rates, as happens in countries reporting ARI, which could explain the early start of the epidemic period in this country. The intensity was between low and medium, and only Greece reached high intensity level in weeks 7 to 9/2014.
