Mentions: The chemical specificity of Raman spectroscopy makes it anideal technique to noninvasively characterise an extensive variety of sampletypes. Recent developments utilising the diffusion of photons through turbidmedia (spatially offset Raman spectroscopy (SORS) [11] and transmission Raman(TR) spectroscopy [12]) have overcome the inherent bias of conventional Ramanspectroscopy towards surface layers, and allowed the identification and chemicalcharacterization of subsurface layers. Potential application areas include thedetection of bone disease and breast cancer, online monitoring ofpharmaceutical production lines, and security screening (see Figure 6).
