Thiram inhibits angiogenesis and slows the development of experimental tumours in mice.

Bottom Line: These effects were prevented by addition of antioxidants, indicating involvement of reactive oxygen species.These data indicate that the effects of thiram are mediated by inhibition of Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase activity.We found that oral administration of thiram (30 microg) to mice caused significant inhibition of C6 glioma tumour development (60%) and marked reduction (by 3-5-fold) in metastatic growth of Lewis lung carcinoma.

BCE, BSMC, BALB/MK keratinocytes, C6 glioma cells and 3T3 fibroblasts following incubation with the indicated concentrations of TR for 6 h or for 20 h with BALB/MK, were analysed by the TUNEL method as described in Materials and Methods. Only the nuclei of treated BCE were labelled using the TUNEL staining method. The nuclei of treated BSMC, BALB/MK C6 glioma cells and 3T3 fibroblasts were not labelled. Experiments were repeated twice with triplicates.
