There is a honeycombed appearance of the matrix (status spongiosus). The pronounced astroglial response near the periphery of the cord indicates that he patient had received adequate therapy for pernicious anemia. Scattered reactive astrocytes are to be noted elsewhere. The lesion probably represents primary degeneration of the posterior column. Cresyl violet stain. x75
