Numerous axis cylinders have disappeared, and many of those that remain are swollen or fragmented. The circumscribed, argentophilic smudgelike areas represent accumulations of debris from degenerated axis cylinders. The few dark cells are probably macrophages. Note also the degeneration in the granular layer. Bielschowsky silber impregnation.
