ABSTRACT

"The space is the place" ... Just like in the brain and the spine, the differential diagnosis for head, neck, and sinus lesions starts with their location. The differential diagnosis can now be more focused. Suprahyoid Neck • Pharyngeal Mucosal space » Squamous cell carcinoma » Lymphoma » Salivary gland tumors (minor glands) » Thornwaldt cyst • Parapharyngeal space » Minor salivary gland tumors » Infiltration from another space • Masticator space » Sarcomas, including Rhabdomysarcoma » Lymphoma » Squamous cell carcinoma • Parotid space » Parotid tumors (plomorphic adenoma, Warthin, mucoepidermoid, adenoid cystic) » Metastases, including nodes • Carotid space » Paraganglioma ("glomus" tumors) » Aneurysms and Dissection » Schwannoma » Metastases, including nodes • Retropharyngeal space » Metastases, including nodes and direct invasion • Prevertebral space » Abscess » Vertebral body neoplasm » Schwannoma and neurofibroma Infrahyoid Neck SOURCE - Radiology Assistant - http://www.radiologyassistant.nl/en/49c603213caff • Visceral space » Laryngocele » Squamous cell carcinoma » Multinodular goiter » Thyroglossal duct cyst • Carotid space » Schwannoma » Paraganglioma » Jugular vein (e.g. thrombosis) » Second branchial cleft cyst • Retropharyngeal Space » Abscess » Retropharyngeal edema • Posterior cervical space » Lymphoma » Lipoma » Lymphangioma or Cystic hygroma • Perivertebral space » Sarcoma » Benign fibrous tumor From Wesley Norman, PhD, DSc: http://mywebpages.comcast.net/wnor/lesson7.htm From Loyola University Chicago: http://www.meddean.luc.edu/lumen/MedED/grossanatomy/dissector/muscles/rca.htm http://www.meddean.luc.edu/lumen/meded/grossAnatomy/dissector/muscles/rpmj.htm
