The cerebral cortex is sharply demarcated from the pia-arachnoid. There is increased cellularity of the basal pia, and above this, a serofibrinous exudates. The outer compartments of the subarachnoidal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) spaces are filled with leukocytes. The purulent exudate covers the hemispheres, obscuring the sulci (“skull-cap” meningitis).
