Intracranial internal carotid artery aneurysm

ABSTRACT

Intracranial aneurysms develop at arterial bifurcations due to hemodynamic impact of flowing blood. The most common site of aneuysum formation are at the level of the posterior communicating artery origin from the ICA, at the ICA and MCA bifurcations and at the junctions of the Anterior communicating artery and the Agar\'s. About 90% of aneurysms involve the anterior circulation and 10% arise in the vertebral basilar system. About 1 % of the population suffers from aneurysms and women outnumber males by 33%. Children are rarely found to have aneurysms and if present are usually in the posterior circulation. 15 to 20% of patients are found to have more than one aneurysm. Aneurysms are familial in some cases and are associated with various connective tissue disorders. Most secular aneurysms are usually not symptomatic unless they rupture. TIA\'s and seizures are only infrequently encountered in this population. Complications of aneurysm rupture include death, vasospasm leading to infarction and hydrocephalus.
