ABSTRACT

Quahogs, oysters, soft-shell clams, mussels and scallops are filter-feeders. During or after the red tide "blooms" of a poisonous dinoflagellate (plankton) toxins made by these microorganisms accumulate in the digestive tracts of these types of shellfish. In turn, if we eat these shellfish, we inadvertently consume the toxin from them.
