This is the chemical formula for vitamin B1 - or thiamine. Thiamine is essential for carbohydrate metabolism, catabolism of amino acids, and the two neurotransmitters acetylcholine and (GABA) gamma-aminobutyric acid. Thiamine is also essential for fermentation of sugars by yeast. So, while alcoholics are at risk for thiamine deficiency - they depend on it for their libations.
