ABSTRACT

A burlesque on the Royal Institution, which had been recently founded. A group of fashionable people sits in a semi-circle and watches an experiment that takes place at a table in the center of a lecture hall. The lecturer experiments on another man by administering gas through a tube inserted in the latter's mouth while he pinches the subject's nostrils. The result is a violent explosion of flame and smoke from the subject's breeches. Audience members variously hold their noses, take snuff, write notes, or react with surprise.
